One of the most popular, beloved singer-songwriters of her generation, Janis Ian has been making albums since she was 16 years old. Her first single, "Society's Child," was a huge hit in 1967. The Grammy winning "At Seventeen," released in 1975, became one of the most popular songs of the 70s. She's had many, many more successes since then, including hit movie tracks and a popular (and critically well received) autobiography, Society's Child: My Autobiography. In addition to her music Ian is a well known author, having penned articles for The Advocate and Performing Songwriter, in addition to poetry and short stories. She also runs The Pearl Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to providing college scholarships for deserving students. She's a champion for issues of the 2000's (like spousal abuse and AIDS) and appears regularly on controversial radio and TV shows like Howard Stern where she speaks openly about lesbianism and other issues.
Ian's new site is the final destination for all things Janis. Visitors will find all the usual things like news, tour dates, photos, videos, forums and a store. But what really makes this site special is the enormous amount of information and resources available. A huge "Listening Room" gives visitors the ability to listen to every song from her 30+ albums and read lyrics for every song. All the lyrics are cross-referenced in an "All Lyrics" section. Many songs are available in a PDF format which includes chords. There are free MP3 downloads and free downloadable ringtones. Visitors can read dozens of articles Ian has written for Performing Songwriter and The Advocate as well as excerpts from her autobiography and many short stories. There are resources for libraries, educational institutions and bookstores, information on Master Classes and videos of workshops and lectures. Throw in a custom Google Site Search function and visitors can find anything they are looking for with one click.
